(3/6) Thunderhead
Today was our first full day in the Smokies. Last night the cold stole all the power from our batteries so I don’t have many pictures and had to originally write this post with pen and paper. For this reason, it will likely be a shorter post. We hiked our first major peak in the SMNP, Thunderhead Mountain. The view from the peak was beautiful despite the overcast skies.
We got a later start this morning but still managed to hike 17 miles before reaching our shelter at 5 pm. There are three through hikers and two section hikers in the shelter with us. It was a cold day today and tonight will probably be pretty cold as well. The weather should take a turn for the better tomorrow though, which is when we will climb Clingman’s Dome, the highest point of the AT.
So far the Smokies have been about as difficult as anything we have hiked before, but it has been marginally prettier. Hopefully when the weather improves it so will the views.
Goodnight.
