(3/17) Quick and Confused

After our less than optimal performance yesterday we woke up early this morning to get a good start to the day. We ate a dry breakfast due to the heavy rain and were walking by 8:15. It felt like we were doing pretty well until we stopped in a shelter at noon for lunch.

In the shelter was a through hiker who gave us some very confusing stories. He had his guide book out so we asked him how far we had come so far. He told us we had come 7.5 miles. This was very surprising as we generally average 2.5 miles per hour and we had been hiking for 4 hours. After a quick lunch we continued hiking as fast as possible, thinking we were behind our desired pace. However, when I checked my guide book during a short rest I realized we had been given inaccurate information (I doubt it was malicious). Anyway, we were ahead of schedule and had hiked over 12 miles before 1 pm.

We then started a challenging ascent up Roan High Knob, a 6300 foot monster. The climb took us until 4 in the afternoon and there was still a thick fog. Despite the lack of views the woods on top were very cool. We then descended down 1000 feet. Ok the way down we had a pretty cool view of some distant mountains shrouded in fog.

To finish of the day in style, we ran into Fresh Grounds at Carvers Gap. He fed us dinner and we talked with a group of 4 other through hikers. Then Fresh Grounds convinced us to camp nearby so he could feed us breakfast as well. We decided that this was a good plan and set up camp instead of hiking another 4 miles in the rain.

Our gear is quite wet from the days of rain we have had. It will be so nice take a zero, shower, and dry everything off. Tomorrow we will hike 14 miles to Route 19e where Tyler’s dad will pick us up and provide us with a day off and a resupply.

Thanks, everyone who has supported us so far. We have received so much encouragement and help from our friends and family. Even just seeing that people are reading the blog has given me  determination to keep going. You guys are keeping us on the trail and supporting us physically and emotionally. Thank you.

Goodnight.

Walker
