(2/28) Back To It

Today was not a particularly easy day. But it was very rewarding. We slept excellently at the motel in Hiawassee. After packing up, getting breakfast at a diner, and cleaning up the room it was around 10:30 am. We called a shuttle named “Maw’s Dirt Cheap Taxi Service,” and we’re back to Dicks Creek Gap around 11. It was around that time where the snow started falling pretty heavily. The plan was to hike ‘only 11 miles’ to Muskrat Shelter, crossing into North Carolina in the process.

While at breakfast we overheard that school had been canceled in Hiawasee. Because there was supposed to be a half inch of snow. And it haven’t even started falling yet. Our waitress was shocked to hear that we were going back out on the trail that day. She asked, “You guys aren’t going back out there today are you?” And when we said we were she said surprised, “but it’s going to snow!”

The snow was coming down pretty quickly when we started hiking and the wind was rather strong. The tail accumulated over 2 inches of snow. There was not much in the way of views for us today, as visibility was very low from the storm. I got very few pictures.

The best part of today was crossing into North Carolina. We made it through our first state. Now we have something like 13 to go. Georgia did not make it easy on us, with weather and gear issues. But we have learned a ton already and our bodies are adapting. I can only imagine how much we will develop after 1000 miles.

Once we crossed into NC we got hammered with snow and put our heads down to cover the distance we needed to get to the shelter / camp ground for the night. We got there a little late and barely found spots to set up our tents. After rushing to eat, set up camp, and hang the bear bag we got into bed exhausted.

We expect a colder night and some snow tonight. Tomorrow is supposed to be clear and cold, perfect for hiking. I think Vermont will go his own way in the morning. We will definitely run into each other later down the trail.

Goodnight.
