(2/26) Challenge and Beauty

Today was another beautiful hike. Georgia has been much more than either Tyler or I expected in terms of challenge and beauty. We expected the state to be relatively flat in comparison to the hiking we are used to in New Hampshire. While Georgia is not nearly as vertical as the White Mountains, it is still difficult hiking and will take its toll if we are not careful.

We woke up after a good night sleep and gathered our things for breakfast in the dark. As the sun rose we ate breakfast and packed up. Hiking started pretty easy and we moved quickly for the first few hours. The skies were still pretty clear and we had some nice scenery. Not too long after, the difficulty of the trail picked up as we started ascending Blue Mountain. We got up to a shelter near the peak of Blue Mt and ate a snack. I used some trail medicine to take care of my first blisters of the trail.

At Blue Mt Shelter we encountered two other hikers who go by Frosty and Jacky. Frosty is posting vlogs on YouTube as he hikes, which I’m excited to watch when I get a chance.

After our break at Blue Mt shelter, the hiking became a little more arduous. We began to ascend Rocky Mt and my knee began to hurt. It got slightly worse throughout the day, but I’m hoping that our short break in Hiawasee along with a stretching routine will cure it.

Passing over Rocky Mt, we dropped down into a gap where we received apples from a trail angel. We chatted for a while and were forced to put on our rain gear for obvious reasons.

The hike up to  Trey Mt was somewhat challenging but we knocked it out quickly and made it to Trey Mt shelter by 4 pm, a 12 mile day. To our surprise we found Osceola in the shelter. We ate dinner and talked with him for a bit before hanging our bear bags and heading to bed.

Tomorrow we expect a clear but cold day, and we plan to hike to Dicks Creek Gap where we will catch a shuttle to Hiawasee for a resupply, some rest, and some town food.

Goodnight.

  1. Glad you got a good night's sleep. Stretching is a good idea and hope it helps your knee, along with rest, and whatever miracle ointment my parents are going to send. 😀
Get some mole skin for those blisters if u haven't already. That should help.
    Enjoy the town food!

    1. My knee was much better today! Stretching did wonders. Yeah, moleskin was the secret ingredient in my trial medicine. Along with some antibiotic. Thanks!

  2. You guys are doing great!! A box arrived today which holds your malfunctioning tent, I believe. How's the new one working out? Dad and I attended a string quartet concert last night in Nashua with his new co-workers. They played a beautiful Hayden piece that I think you'd like. His new co-workers are very nice. I am eager to hear if your filter was waiting for you in Hiawasee.

  3. So glad you had a great day and can rest your knees. Will you climb Lookout Mountain on the edge of Georgia and Tennessee? Very beautiful through that part of the state.

    1. Sadly we don’t get quite that far west on the AT. We don’t cross directly from GA to TN, but we go through NC first then into TN. I would love to check it out some time though. There’s some history there too right?
